New initiative for education reform in Chhattisgarh: Concrete steps towards strengthening and student-centric education system through rationalization

Providing quality education to children is our top priority – Chief Minister Sai

Raipur 28 May 2025: The state government led by Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai has decided to implement the process of rationalization of schools and teachers on priority to give an excellent form to the education system of the state and to ensure quality education. The reason behind this decision is the review report of the Education Department, which has revealed the serious situation of unequal distribution of resources in government schools across the state. According to the report, there are 211 government schools in Chhattisgarh where not a single student is enrolled, yet regular teachers are posted there. This is not only leading to misuse of educational resources, but the lack of teachers in the schools in need is affecting the studies of the students. For example, there are no students in the primary school Sajabhavana of Batouli development block of Surguja district, while one assistant teacher is working there. Similarly, the student strength in Harratikara school is also zero, but one head teacher and two assistant teachers are posted there.

The Education Department has clarified that the relevance of such schools has ended, and now teachers from there will be immediately employed in those schools where they are needed. On the other hand, there has been a teacher crisis in many remote and tribal areas of the state for years. Due to the lack of subject-wise teachers in the Government Higher Secondary School Kunwarpur in Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district, the result of class 12th examination in the year 2024-25 was only 40.68 percent, which is much lower than the state average. When Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai was on a visit to Kunwarpur, the villagers strongly placed the demand for teacher appointments before him. The villagers said that teachers are not available for subjects like Mathematics, Science and English for years, which is directly affecting the education of the students.b Taking this demand seriously, Chief Minister Sai directed the Education Department to send teachers from where they are posted unnecessarily to the needy schools as soon as possible. He said that teachers should be posted where there are students – this is the primary condition of good governance. Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai said that providing quality education to children is our top priority. This is a campaign to strengthen the education system of the state. He said that we are laying the foundation of a system where both teachers and students are in their right place. Rationalization is the key to this change, which will solve the problems of years and give new heights to education.

Experts associated with the education sector believe that this decision is the need of the hour. If it is implemented with fairness and data-based method, then the education system of Chhattisgarh can become an ideal model in the country. On the instructions of Chief Minister Sai, the Education Department has immediately activated the rationalization process, in which transparency, human approach and the need of schools have been made the primary basis. On the one hand, this step will enable teacherless schools to get teachers, while on the other hand, the posting of teachers in studentless schools will be stopped. This restructuring will make the education system balanced, efficient and result-oriented. The rationalization decision of the Chhattisgarh government is not just a systemic reform, but a historic initiative to make education meaningful and inclusive. It is a reflection of the thought that says – Education begins where both teachers and students are present – moving towards a golden future with a noble purpose, with the inspiration that every school is the building block of the nation’s next generation.
