MP is the first state in the country to include sign language in police training
Bhopal. The Madhya Pradesh government has made an important change in the police training process by including sign language under the provisions of the Disabled Rights Act-2016. The objective of this step is to ensure that police officers and employees can easily understand the words of disabled people trapped in distress and can treat them sensitively. Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country to take this step in the field of disabled welfare.
The role of Commissioner for Disabled Welfare Sandeep Rajak has been important in implementing this training system. Under the provisions of the Disabled Rights Act, he had given decisions from his court to the effect that a meaningful initiative should be taken on this humane and sensitive issue. It is often seen that sometimes such disabled people trapped in distress who are unable to speak and hear, are unable to make their point understood by the police and administration officer or the officer/employees are unable to make their point understood due to lack of knowledge of sign and Braille language, as a result, disabled people often get trapped in serious trouble.
The interaction of policemen with persons with disabilities is often fraught with communication challenges for them. This new initiative will equip policemen with basic knowledge and skills of sign language, so that they can communicate better and ensure their safety. The inclusion of this initiative in police training will also increase the sensitivity of policemen and help create an inclusive and understanding environment towards persons with disabilities.
The state government believes that this initiative will respect the rights of persons with disabilities and prevent any kind of neglect against them. This step will prove to be important in bringing a positive change in the society, which will empower the safety and equality of all citizens.
