UPI service launched in Paris, Indian Ambassador made payment

India has launched the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at Galeries Lafayette, the historic department store in Paris. This historic move is another step towards realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of globalization of UPI. It was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016.

The Indian Embassy in France said that UPI services started at the flagship store of the world famous Galeries Lafayette in Haussmann, Paris on 3 July 2024. The statement said that earlier UPI was successfully launched at the iconic Eiffel Tower. Javed Ashraf, Ambassador of India to France and the Principality of Monaco, also made a payment through UPI at the store in the presence of Nicolas Hause, CEO of Galeries Lafayette and Alain Lacour, Chairman of Lyra Group. Ashraf confirmed the launch of the UPI service in a post.
