Ujjain Janpad Panchayat President to be Re-Elected Following Court Order

Ujjain: The Ujjain Janpad Panchayat President will now be re-elected. The Indore High Court’s double bench has declared the election held three years ago as invalid and has ordered a re-election. In line with the court’s order, the collector will oversee the election process once again. To give some context, the Janpad Panchayat elections were held on June 25, 2022. The election for President and Vice President took place on July 27, 2022, but it led to a lot of chaos. Despite the protests, Vindhya Devendra Singh Panwar, from Piploda Dwarkadhish and backed by the Congress, was elected President. However, 13 members were not allowed to vote during the election. In response to this, the then Higher Education Minister of the state, who is now the Chief Minister, Dr. Mohan Yadav, along with BJP-supported Zila Parishad members and workers, staged a protest. They accused the administration of sabotaging democracy by preventing 13 BJP-backed members from casting their votes.

The court stepped in on July 28 and stayed the election results. The petitioners argued that three elected district members couldn’t vote because they were suffering from Covid-19, and they had authorized district members 11 and 13 to vote on their behalf. Even after presenting Covid certificates, the election officer rejected all the applications and declared Vindhya Panwar as the President, even though the presiding officer had the option to postpone the election. Congress MLA Mahesh Parmar stated that if the elections were mishandled, the former collector and other officials should be held accountable and punished. He stressed that the Congress won the election through democratic means.
