Tihar Jail Guards on Alert Over Threat to Arvind Kejriwal

In New Delhi’s Tihar Jail, guards are on high alert due to concerns that some inmates may attempt to harm Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for notoriety. The jail, specifically Jail No. 2 where Kejriwal is housed, has a history of incidents.

In 2021, an inmate named Srikan Ramaswami was murdered during a gang conflict within the prison complex. Ramaswami, originally from Delhi’s Ashok Vihar, had been arrested in connection with a murder case in 2015. The prison authorities reported that he was attacked by four undertrials with cricket bats on May 14 at around 7 am. Although the four suspects were arrested by the police, the court transferred the investigation to the CBI. Additionally, surprise checks in the jail recently uncovered 33 mobile phones.

Despite the challenges, Kejriwal has been able to maintain his routine while in jail. He has been allowed to communicate with his wife through video conference and has met with his lawyer in person. Although he finds the conditions slightly uncomfortable at night, he adheres to his usual habits. Kejriwal is provided with home-cooked food as per court orders, along with his medications. He starts his day early with yoga, followed by a breakfast of bread and tea. Throughout the day, he engages in activities like walking around his cell and reading.

Kejriwal is currently in judicial custody until April 15 in connection with a money laundering case related to an alleged excise policy scam.
