Steve Smith Joins the 10,000 Test Runs Club – A Major Milestone for the Aussie Star

Steve Smith has just hit an incredible milestone in his Test cricket career, surpassing 10,000 runs. This achievement came on the first day of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka, making him only the fourth Australian cricketer to ever reach this mark. After accomplishing this feat, Smith spoke with Channel Seven during the lunch break, sharing his joy and saying, “It feels great to reach this milestone.”
Smith now joins an elite group of Australian legends like Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, and Steve Waugh who have also scored 10,000 runs in Test cricket. What makes his achievement even more impressive is that he reached it in just 205 innings, making it the fifth-fastest in the history of Test cricket.
A Historic Moment for Australian Cricket
In the interview, Allan Border, who is now in the same 10,000-run club as Smith, praised the Australian batsman’s distinctive approach and strong determination. In a statement to the Sydney Morning Herald, Border remarked, “He’s not someone you’d necessarily tell your son to copy in terms of technique, but it’s worked for him, and that’s a sign that he truly understands his game. He’s done it brilliantly. There are players who may look better, but few have such a record.”
Border didn’t hold back in comparing Smith to the greatest players of all time, saying, “I’m a huge fan of (Sachin) Tendulkar and (Brian) Lara – they were exceptional players, but Steve is definitely right there with them.”
A Rare Achievement for Smith
Smith now stands as the fourth Australian to reach the prestigious 10,000-run mark in Test cricket, becoming the 15th player overall to do so. With an average of over 55 runs per innings, Smith is among the best, with Kumar Sangakkara being the only player with a higher average at 57.40. Among current players, only Joe Root, with 12,972 Test runs, has more runs than Smith.
Smith had come close to this milestone previously at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where he was dismissed for 9,999 runs in front of his home crowd. However, in the very first ball of the Galle Test, he managed to get his 10,000th run, making the moment even more special.
Celebrating the Milestone
In the opening session of the Galle Test, with the score at 137/2, Smith took a single off Prabath Jayasuriya’s delivery to mid-on, making history with his 10,000th run. The crowd cheered wildly, and Smith shared a heartfelt celebration with his batting partner Usman Khawaja, hugging him in joy. This was a monumental achievement for Smith, his teammates, and cricket fans around the world, marking a memorable moment in his career.
