PM Modi to Launch Two Trekking Routes in Jadung; Biking Tourism to Flourish Like Ladakh

PM Modi’s Visit to Uttarkashi: Boosting Tourism & Adventure Sports in Border Areas
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand on February 27. During his visit, he will tour Mukbha and Harsil Valley and also head towards the Nelong-Jadung Valley, located near the India-China border. Here, he will lay the foundation for two trekking routes—one from Jadung to Janak Taal, which is relatively easy, and another from Neelapani to Mulingna Pass, which is more challenging. The launch of these trekking routes marks a significant step towards reviving tourism in the valley, which has remained largely inaccessible since the 1962 India-China war. Plans are in place to develop this area similarly to Ladakh, turning it into a hub for adventure tourism. Nelong Valley, in particular, is set to become a prime mountain biking destination, as its terrain closely resembles that of Ladakh. This will not only attract adventure enthusiasts but also boost tourism in the Vibrant Villages of Nelong and Jadung. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering had previously initiated mountain biking expeditions in this valley, and the new developments aim to expand on that foundation.
Situated about 115 km from Uttarkashi district headquarters, Nelong Valley shares geographical similarities with Ladakh and Spiti, earning it the title of “Uttarakhand’s Ladakh.” During the 1962 war, the indigenous Jadh Bhotiya community residing in Nelong and Jadung villages was relocated. Now, under the Vibrant Villages scheme, the government is working to revive these settlements by improving infrastructure and encouraging tourism. To support this effort, homestays are being built, ensuring local residents have access to new economic opportunities. District officials have confirmed that Nelong and Sonam Valleys have excellent potential for mountain biking, similar to Ladakh. Recognizing this, the administration has decided to promote Nelong as a mountain biking hotspot, which is expected to bring in more tourists and provide a boost to the local economy.
