One Village, Eight Losses: Kondavad Grieves After Well Accident Turns Deadly

Khandwa (Khandwa Well Accident) – The bodies of the eight villagers who lost their lives in a tragic well-cleaning accident during preparations for immersing Gangaur Mata’s Jaware in Kondavad village, Khandwa district, were brought back to the village from the district hospital around 8:30 a.m. on Friday. The moment the ambulances reached the village, cries and wails echoed all around, and every eye turned teary. All eight bodies were brought back together, and a huge crowd—over two thousand people—gathered to mourn. For the first time, the village witnessed the cremation of eight people at once, held in the morning at Kundavad’s cremation ground. The atmosphere was filled with sorrow and silence as families bid farewell to their loved ones. Since Thursday afternoon, most households in the village haven’t even lit their stoves to cook food, grieving deeply. Among the deceased was Arjun Patel, who is survived by six daughters. His 15-year-old daughter Khushi gathered the courage to light her father’s funeral pyre, a heartbreaking and brave moment that moved everyone present.
