India Might Get More Fuel from the US Under the Trump Administration: Hardeep Singh Puri

India Looks Forward to More Energy Imports

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, mentioned on Tuesday that India could receive more fuel from the US, especially after President Donald Trump’s administration announced plans to boost oil and gas production. While speaking at an event organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Puri pointed out that the number of suppliers providing oil to India has increased from 27 to 39. He emphasized that India is open to importing more oil but is also keeping a close eye on the new US administration’s policies.

US Policy Changes Could Make a Difference

When asked about President Trump’s efforts to increase oil drilling and gas production, Puri responded, “If you want to know if more American energy is likely to come into the market, I’d say yes. And if you’re wondering whether there’s a good chance of boosting energy trade between India and the US, the answer is also yes.”

Promoting Ethanol and Cleaner Fuels

Puri also encouraged car manufacturers to provide more flex-fuel vehicles, which can run on higher blends of ethanol, in the Indian market. He mentioned that India is on track to meet its goal of blending 20% ethanol in petrol ahead of schedule, likely within the next few years.

Possible Price Drops and Supplier Diversification

The minister noted that besides the US, countries like Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and Canada are expected to supply more oil to India. This increase in supply could lead to lower global fuel prices, which would be a win for Indian consumers. However, when asked about the US decision to pull out of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, Puri chose not to comment.

Waiting for Concrete Developments

While some of the decisions made by the Trump administration were expected, Puri stressed the need to closely monitor developments before making any reactions. India’s energy strategy remains focused on diversifying its sources and ensuring sustainability, striking a balance between economic growth and environmental responsibilities. This approach shows that India is ready to adapt to shifting global energy trends while securing affordable and reliable fuel supplies.
