How to Perform a Virtuous Bath at Home on Mauni Amavasya, Even if You Can’t Go to Maha Kumbh

Bhopal (Mauni Amavasya Snan 2025): Mauni Amavasya will be observed on 29th January. The day holds special significance in Hinduism. It is believed that if one follows the rituals, takes a dip in the river, and makes donations on this day, the souls of their ancestors will be pleased and blessed. The Amavasya (new moon) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Magh is considered particularly sacred and is known as Mauni Amavasya. Bathing in holy rivers on this day is of great importance. If someone is unable to reach a river, they can still purify themselves by adding Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges) to their bath. Mauni Amavasya will begin on the night of 28th January at 7:35 pm and end on 29th January 2025 at 6:05 pm. According to the Udaya date (the day the tithi occurs after sunrise), Mauni Amavasya will be celebrated on 29th January. Hundreds of Devotees Heading to Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Bathing in the Ganga river is considered highly auspicious, and this year, the Maha Kumbh Mela is also being held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after 144 years. It is believed that by bathing in the holy waters of the Kumbh on Mauni Amavasya, one can attain freedom from sins. Consequently, hundreds of people from the city are planning to visit Prayagraj to take part in the Kumbh. Donation Holds Special Significance In Hinduism, donation holds great importance, especially during fasts, festivals, and the Purnima-Amavasya tithis. If someone comes to your home asking for help on Mauni Amavasya, it is considered a good deed to give them something. Furthermore, Amavasya is considered the best time to offer tarpan (ritual water offering) to ancestors, seeking their blessings. On Mauni Amavasya, offering tarpan with black sesame seeds is believed to please the ancestors and help eliminate Pitra Dosh (ancestral flaws).

Temple Preparations Underway In preparation for Mauni Amavasya, worship services will take place at the city’s Shreeji Temple, Shri Krishna Temple, Shri Ram Temple, and other temples. Temple committees and trust members are organizing the rituals, and arrangements are being made to ensure devotees have places to sit and access drinking water within the temple premises. Additionally, plans are in place to donate warm clothes to those in need. The Significance of Bathing on Mauni Amavasya According to religious beliefs, on Mauni Amavasya, Lord Vishnu is believed to reside in the waters of all holy rivers, including the Sangam. This year, the Maha Kumbh is taking place at the holy confluence (Sangam) in Prayagraj after 144 years, during a highly auspicious time. Bathing in the Sangam on Mauni Amavasya and offering water to the Sun God is believed to yield the same spiritual benefits as performing the Ashwamedha Yagna (an ancient horse sacrifice ritual). For those who cannot bathe in the Sangam due to distance or other reasons, adding Gangajal to their bath on this day will provide similar blessings.
