Government buys 71000 tonnes of onions for buffer stock
The government has so far bought about 71,000 tonnes of onions for buffer stock this year out of the total target of buying five lakh tonnes of onions to control prices. Also, the government expects retail prices to come down with the progress of monsoon in most parts of the country. According to data collected by the Department of Consumer Affairs, the all-India average retail price of onion on Friday was Rs 38.67 per kg, while the price of high quality onion was Rs 40 per kg.
The Center has bought 70,987 tonnes of onions till June 20
A senior official of the Department of Consumer Affairs said that till June 20, the Center has bought 70,987 tonnes of onions, while 74,071 tonnes of onions were bought in the same period last year. “Despite an estimated 20 per cent drop in rabi production, the pace of onion procurement for price stabilisation buffer this year is largely at par with last year,” the official said. He said the government is moving towards achieving the target of procuring five lakh tonnes for price stabilisation.
