This joint effort of the government and society for their conservation is not only exemplary, but it will make Madhya Pradesh a leader in water management. Water Resources Minister Shri Silawat said that giving concrete form to the “Catch the Rain” resolution of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Jal Ganga Sanskar Abhiyan based on the principle of ‘farm water in the field, village water in the village’ has given a new direction to water conservation in Madhya Pradesh. This campaign, run by the Water Resources Department under the able leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Yadav in the state from 30 March to 30 June 2025, transformed water conservation into a mass movement.
Minister Shri Silawat said that this campaign took awareness towards water conservation to new heights and encouraged community participation. Digital mapping, development of climate-friendly structures and inclusion of financial-technical resources will further strengthen water management in future. The message of “Water is the basis of life” reached the people, which ensured effective maintenance and conservation of water structures. Shri Silawat said that Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan laid the foundation of a revolutionary change in the field of water management and agricultural development in the state through the Water Resources Department. Completion of minor and medium irrigation projects, extensive cleaning of canals, renovation of ponds and reservoirs and public participation based initiatives gave a new dimension to the efficiency and sustainability of water resources. This campaign is not only a matter of pride for Madhya Pradesh, but has become an inspiration for the country in the field of water conservation.
Notable achievements of the campaign Under the campaign, works of 2,190 out of 2,444 major water structures were completed in all 55 districts of the state, in which works like renovation of ponds and reservoirs, cleaning of canals, encroachment removal and tree plantation were done on war footing. Special progress was registered in areas like Ujjain, Indore, Chambal-Betwa, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Sagar and Vanganga basin. Under the renovation works of water structures, cleaning of ponds, reservoirs and canals, pitching, boulder toe, reconstruction of dams, repair of sluice gates and ghats made the water flow uninterrupted. These works increased water storage capacity, encouraged groundwater recharge, reduced soil erosion and ensured long-term durability of water structures. Under the campaign, cleaning of canals and marking canals as government property and installing kilometer stones made water management transparent and systematic, which removed encroachment and reduced illegal water use. Under historical water structures, the renovation of 300-year-old Mata Ahilya Bawdi, beautification of Kanada Talab and Ratnatalai Talab and Bhoomi Pujan of Tigaria Goga Barrage etc. are symbols of the success of this campaign. In the campaign, works like cleaning of Kerwa Dam with public participation, Shramdaan in Jamwar Talab of Vidisha and discussion on water conservation with children in Ramnagar strengthened the sense of ownership and responsibility in the community.
