These days, a unique fruit has caught everyone’s attention in the Bharatpur market. Not only is this fruit delicious, but it also offers health benefits when consumed. However, it is only available in the market for about 2 to 3 months each season. While the fruit is beautiful and tasty, bringing it to the market involves facing several challenges.Farmer Karan Singh shared with Local 18 that harvesting this fruit from ponds requires a lot of hard work. This fruit is primarily grown in the large ponds and dams near Bharatpur, with the Barethha Dam being the most prominent. The cultivation of this fruit takes place in these ponds, which are rented out specifically for growing it.
Careful attention is needed when farming this fruit because picking it from the ponds is no easy task. Farmers have to wade into the water and carefully harvest the fruit. The ponds also harbor various insects, so they apply insect repellent on their skin to stay safe. Additionally, they cover their bodies with clothing to avoid any illnesses. From morning till evening, farmers sit on tubes or special equipment while harvesting the fruit underwater. After all this hard work, the fruit finally makes it to the market. It becomes available after the rainy season, which also increases the number of buyers. With high demand for this fruit in the market, people are purchasing it in large quantities. The surrounding areas of Bharatpur see farmers working day and night to bring this fruit to market. It is not only popular among locals but also attracts buyers from other places who come specifically to purchase it.
