International news : Mohammad Mustafa appointed new PM of Palestine amid war

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed Mohammad Mustafa as Prime Minister amid US pressure to reform the Palestinian Authority (PA). Mustafa has been a long-time economic advisor to Abbas. His appointment as Prime Minister of Palestine is said to be part of America’s post-war plan in the wake of the Gaza war. Former Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shatih resigned from the government last month.
Palestinian President Abbas announced the appointment of Mustafa as Prime Minister in a statement. Abbas also asked the new PM to make plans to re-integrate governance in the West Bank and Gaza, lead reforms in the government, security services and the economy, and fight corruption.

Mohammed Mustafa, a US-educated economist, will lead a technocratic government in the Israeli-occupied West Bank that could administer Gaza before it grants it statehood. Mustafa is considered politically open-minded. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is strongly opposing US post-war plans in Gaza. It is not yet clear whether the appointment of a new government led by Mohammad Mustafa will be enough to meet US demands for reform, as 88-year-old President Abbas will retain full control over the Palestinian Authority.
