The problem of dehydration due to extreme heat and excessive sweating is common, especially in children and the elderly. Doctors often recommend taking ORS (oral rehydration solution) to get relief from problems like diarrhea, vomiting and fatigue. But, due to increasing demand, fake ORS are also available in the market, which are very dangerous for health. Therefore, it is very important to know the difference between real and fake ORS.
How to identify real ORS – According to Dr. Pawan Mandaviya, there are many ways to identify real ORS:1. WHO formula: First of all, ‘Based on WHO formula’ should be written on the packet. If there is only FSSAI mark and WHO formula is not mentioned, then understand that it is probably an energy drink, not ORS. Ingredients check: According to the World Health Organization, a 21-gram packet of genuine ORS should contain 2.6 grams of sodium chloride, 2.9 grams of sodium citrate, 1.5 grams of potassium chloride, and 13.5 grams of dextrose. Match this list of ingredients with the quantity and proportion written on the packet.
Packet check – Genuine ORS packets have the brand logo, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and FSSAI license number clearly printed on them. Fake packets may have blurred printing, misspellings, or incomplete information. The powder of genuine ORS is white and fine. If the powder is yellow, brown, or sticky, it may be fake. Solution check: The solution of genuine ORS is clear and slightly salty, not sweet or colored.
Taste check – The taste of genuine ORS is mildly salty and slightly sweet. If it tastes too sweet, then understand that it may be fake. Too much sweetness may taste like an energy drink.By keeping these things in mind, you can easily avoid fake ORS and protect yourself and your family’s health. If you have any doubts, buy ORS from a trusted shop and consult a doctor.
