Beyond Assistance: How AIIMS Rishikesh Volunteers Are Setting Examples of Humanity

AIIMS Rishikesh Volunteers: Going Beyond Service to Save Lives The volunteers at AIIMS Rishikesh are not just helping patients and their families but also stepping up to save lives when needed. In a recent heartwarming incident, these volunteers set an example of humanity by donating 5 units of blood to a 6-year-old child in critical condition. These volunteers are stationed at AIIMS to assist patients and visitors. One such case involved a young boy from Rudrapur (Haldwani) who was brought to AIIMS Rishikesh after suffering from persistent fever and excessive sweating. His mother, Sushma, took him to various hospitals in Haldwani, but when they couldn’t diagnose his condition, she decided to seek treatment at AIIMS. Upon arrival, she was devastated to learn that her child had blood cancer, which was rapidly spreading. His blood levels were dangerously low, and doctors immediately required 4-5 units of blood for his treatment.
For Sushma, who was new to Rishikesh and had no acquaintances in the city, arranging blood seemed impossible. Overwhelmed with worry, she sat in the AIIMS premises, unsure of what to do. That’s when one of the AIIMS volunteers noticed her distress and inquired about her situation. Understanding the urgency, the volunteer shared her concern with the rest of the team. Without hesitation, the volunteers stepped forward and donated 5 units of blood, ensuring the child received the treatment he needed. They also reassured Sushma that, if required, other team members would continue to support her child with blood donations. This is not the first time AIIMS volunteers have come to the rescue. Last year, they donated 8 units of blood to a 3-year-old boy named Karan from Adhaura village in Nainital. These selfless acts of kindness have made them a beacon of hope for patients and their families. Grateful beyond words, Sushma and her family expressed their heartfelt thanks to the volunteers. AIIMS Executive Director, Prof. Meenu Singh, and Medical Superintendent, Prof. Satya Shri, applauded the volunteers for their exceptional work, emphasizing that their contributions go far beyond their regular duties.
Who Are the AIIMS Volunteers?
The AIIMS volunteer group was initiated by Prof. (Dr.) Meenu Singh to assist general patients by providing essential information and supporting those who are helpless, elderly, or disabled. These dedicated volunteers are available round-the-clock at two help desks within AIIMS—one near the trauma center and another on the ground floor near the Neuro OPD in the hospital building. Their mission is simple: to serve humanity, one patient at a time.
