Vandana bought a gold locket for her son with the money she got from Mahtari Vandan
Raipur. Vandana Rathiya of Korkoma village of Korba district wanted to put a small gold locket around her son’s neck, but due to poor financial condition she was unable to fulfill her wish. Vandana had saved some money, but it was not enough to buy a locket for her. Meanwhile, when the Mahtari Vandan Yojana was implemented by the Chhattisgarh government, Vandana’s luck changed. After getting her name added, Vandana started receiving a thousand rupees in her bank account. She saved money for a few months and saved enough to buy a locket for her child. Finally, Vandana went to the village market and got a locket made from a goldsmith and put it around her child’s neck.
Mrs. Rathiya said that after the implementation of Mahtari Vandan Yojana, we women get a thousand rupees every month. This is a very useful amount for us. She told that for women in rural areas, a sum of one thousand is a big amount. She told that the household expenses are met from the husband’s earnings. Vandana Rathia, who came to buy a locket for her child in the weekly market of Korkoma, expressed happiness about the scheme and said that she will make good use of this amount in the future.
It is worth noting that the Chhattisgarh government has started the Mahtari Vandan Yojana as a symbol of self-respect and honour of women. This has awakened a new confidence in women and their social prestige has also increased.
Under the Mahtari Vandan Yojana, married women in the state are being given financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month (total Rs 12,000 annually), which is being deposited directly into their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Women are happy that they are able to fulfill the small needs of their children and family with the amount received from the Mahtari Vandan Yojana.
