Number of startups in India rises to over 1.4 lakh

The number of startups in India has risen to over 1.4 lakh. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada gave this information in the Rajya Sabha. According to a written reply given by the minister in the House on Friday, the state/union territory wise number of startups recognized by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) showed that Maharashtra topped the list with 25,044 registered startups. Karnataka ranked second with 15,019 registered startups, followed by Delhi with 14,734 startups. Uttar Pradesh has secured the fourth position with 13,299 startups, while Gujarat is at the fifth position with 11,436 startups.

The minister also informed that the government has made various efforts to promote and support startups in the country. He said the Government launched the Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016 with the aim of building a strong ecosystem to promote innovation, startups and encourage investments in the country’s startup ecosystem.
