Heavy rains in Sri Lanka, 15 deaths, 19000 people homeless

Heavy rains continue in Sri Lanka. About 15 people died over the weekend due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka. More than five thousand families and more than 19 thousand people became homeless due to the rain. The Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that people have died in seven districts including the capital Colombo.

According to media reports, torrential rains suddenly flooded many cities. Also, many trees have been uprooted and strong winds are blowing there. Lightning also struck and landslides occurred in many areas here. 20 out of 25 administrative districts have been badly affected due to the rain. More than 4000 houses have suffered partial damage. While 28 houses have been completely destroyed.

The Sri Lankan Army has deployed seven teams equipped with boats for rescue operations. The Air Force has kept three helicopters on standby for immediate emergency response in the affected areas. The Ministry of Education has announced the closure of all schools across the country on Monday due to the possibility of further rain and flooding. As a precaution, the Ministry of Power and Energy has cut off power supply in many areas. The National Building Research Center has issued red notices for landslides in four districts.
