Workshop on International Vulture Day at Van Vihar

Bhopal. On International Vulture Day, 7 September, a one-day workshop was organized on the subject of vulture conservation and preservation in Van Vihar National Park, Vihar Vithika. The workshop was attended by the operators/managers of all the cow shelters run by government and non-government voluntary organizations around Bhopal city. In the workshop, the cow operators were provided information on vulture conservation and preservation as well as not to use diclofenac in the treatment of cows and other topics by subject experts.

The objectives of the workshop were highlighted by Meena Awadheshkumar Shivkumar, Director, Van Vihar National Park, Bhopal. Mohd. Khaliq, Bhopal Birds, Bhopal threw light on vulture species and their importance, Ms. Zainab Khan, Biologist, Vulture Conservation Centre, Kerwa, Bhopal, gave information about how vultures are protected in the Vulture Conservation Centre and Dr. Ajay Ramteke, Deputy Director, Veterinary Hospital, Bhopal, through a presentation advised not to use Diclofenac in the treatment of dairy animals and to use Malaxicam instead. The use of Diclofenac has been banned by the Government of India for dairy animals.

At the end of the workshop, the Director discussed with the participants involved in the workshop for the conservation of vultures and concluded the workshop. The workshop was conducted by the Director, Van Vihar. Sunil Kumar Sinha, Assistant Director, Van Vihar, Vijay Babu Nandvanshi, Biologist, Van Vihar and Van Vihar officials were present in the workshop.

In this series, Samsung, Manager, Vulture Conservation Centre, Kerwa, Bhopal, organised a drawing competition for school children on the theme of vulture at Kerwa Centre, the winners of which (first, second and third) were awarded by the Director of Van Vihar and after this, the students were made aware about the conservation and protection of vultures through the game of Snake and Ladder.

International Vulture Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of September. This year, the first Saturday of September fell on 9th September, so various programmes were organised in Van Vihar, in which, under the public awareness campaign, an “On the Spot Quiz” was organised to create interest in the tourists towards the conservation of vultures, in which the tourists who visited Van Vihar participated enthusiastically. In which questions related to the conservation of vultures were asked and those tourists who gave the right answers were also given prizes.
