Uttarakhand Weather: Sudden Shift on Holi, Snowfall & Rain Lower Temperatures

Uttarakhand Weather Update: Rain and Snowfall on Holi, Cold Returns

Dehradun: Uttarakhand woke up to rain and snowfall on the morning of Holi. Higher altitude regions like Gangotri Valley, Yamunotri, Auli, and Badrinath are experiencing snowfall, while Dehradun and other low-lying areas are seeing continuous rainfall. Over the past few days, the weather had been dry, and people had started feeling the warmth of summer, but today’s rain has brought back the winter chill.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected

The Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorms and lightning in some areas of the state. Light to moderate rain is expected in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, while scattered showers are likely in other districts. Meanwhile, Haridwar and Nainital may experience strong winds at 50-60 km/h, prompting the weather department to issue a Yellow Alert.

The forecast also warns of gusty winds at speeds of 40-50 km/h. The weather is expected to remain unsettled until March 17. In regions like Gangotri and Yamunotri, snowfall started around midnight, while lower areas have been witnessing intermittent rainfall. This sudden change has brought back the chill, affecting daily life.

Temperature Drops After a Sunny Spell

Over the past few days, bright sunshine in the plains had pushed the maximum temperature up by 3-4°C above normal. However, today’s rain has caused a sharp temperature drop. Even on Friday (Holi), the weather remained dry with cloudy skies in some places, adding a chilly touch to the celebrations.

Challenges in Snowfall-Affected Areas

Heavy snowfall in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Rudraprayag has disrupted normal life, making travel and daily activities difficult. With rain and snow expected to continue, residents in these areas might face further challenges in the coming days.
