Urban unemployment decreased to 6.7 percent in March quarter
The urban unemployment rate in the country has declined marginally to 6.7 percent in the March quarter. It was 6.8 percent in the same period a year ago. According to the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), urban unemployment for people aged 15 and above in urban areas stood at 6.6 per cent in April-June and July-September last year. In October-December it was 6.5 percent.
According to the 22nd Periodic Labor Force Survey released by NSO on Wednesday, the unemployment rate among women in urban areas decreased to 8.5 percent in January-March this year. This rate was 9.2 percent in the same quarter a year ago. It was 9.1 percent in April-June 2023, 8.6 percent in July-September 2023 and 8.6 percent in October-December 2023.
Increase in men to 6.1 percent
The unemployment rate among urban men increased to 6.1 percent in January-March this year. It was 6 percent in the year-ago period. It was 5.9 percent in April-June 2023, 6 percent in July-September 2023 and 5.8 percent in October-December 2023. The labor force participation rate in current weekly status (CWS) for people aged 15 years and above in urban areas increased to 50.2 per cent in the January-March quarter of 2024. In the same period a year ago, it was 48.5 percent.
