Scrolling Through Reels All Night in Bed, Bad Habits

These days, social media has become a major part of our daily routine. From morning to night, people spend a significant amount of time scrolling through reels. However, this addiction to short videos and reels can lead to issues like hypertension.

Social media has become an inseparable part of our lifestyle. Nowadays, people often check their social media accounts first thing in the morning, and they also spend their nights scrolling through reels. For entertainment and passing the time, many individuals find themselves on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, watching reels all day long. Unfortunately, this habit of watching reels can take a toll on your health. Not only can it affect your mental well-being, but it can also lead to an increase in blood pressure. A study by the BMC has shown a surprising link between watching reels at night and hypertension. The research found that individuals who watch reels or short videos before bed are at a higher risk of developing high blood pressure.

The aim of the study was to determine whether the amount of time spent on screens at night correlates with people’s blood pressure levels, particularly concerning high blood pressure. The study revealed that spending excessive time watching short video content before sleep raises the risk of high blood pressure. Moreover, using screens late at night can act as a trigger for heart-related issues, especially among the current younger generation. Dr. Deepak Krishnamurthy, a heart health specialist from Bengaluru, commented on the study’s findings. He noted on social media platform X that aside from being a distraction and wasting time, the addiction to reels is also a contributing factor to high blood pressure among young adults.

The study also uncovered how the habit of watching reels increases the risk of high blood pressure. Traditional screen time, which includes watching television, playing video games, or working on a computer, generally involves some physical activity. In contrast, watching short videos on mobile devices doesn’t require any physical movement, thus increasing the likelihood of issues like hypertension. Following the study’s results, researchers suggest that young people should be aware of their screen time before bed. This awareness can not only reduce the risk of high blood pressure but also improve sleep quality and overall health. Additionally, the researchers recommend adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management practices.
