PM Modi:‘We don’t obstruct or direct their actions'

In a recent interview with Thanthi TV, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed allegations that central agencies, such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED), were unfairly targeting opposition leaders. He emphasized that these agencies operate autonomously, free from any interference or direction from the government. Modi stressed that neither he nor his administration obstruct or influence their actions. He highlighted the independence of these agencies and noted that their actions are subject to judicial oversight.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarified that only a small fraction, less than 3%, of the cases currently under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are related to politics. He highlighted that out of approximately 7,000 ongoing cases, a minimal number involve politicians. The Prime Minister compared the amounts seized during the previous government’s tenure, which was only ₹35 lakh, to the current administration’s efforts, resulting in the seizure of ₹2200 crore.

Responding to allegations that the ED targets only non-BJP members, Modi explained that the agency cannot independently initiate cases. Cases must first be filed by various departments before the ED can take action. He emphasized that the legal framework for such actions, like the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), existed before his tenure but was underutilized. Additionally, he mentioned opposition attempts to challenge the PMLA law through court cases, suggesting they aimed to obstruct anti-corruption efforts.
