Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa filed nomination for presidential election
Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa filed his nomination on Wednesday as a candidate for the presidential election to be held on September 21 in Sri Lanka. During this, he deposited the security amount with the Election Commission. So far, five candidates have come forward for the presidential election.
Political activities are in full swing in Sri Lanka regarding the presidential election. Current President Ranil Wickremesinghe has already announced to contest the election as an independent. A group of 116 former provincial council members of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and United National Party (UNP) have said that they will support him. On Tuesday, 92 members of Parliament also met and promised to support him.
Apart from this, Sarath Keerthiratne has announced to contest as an independent and Marxist JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has also announced to contest the election by July 26. Apart from this, Sri Lanka’s Justice Minister Vijayadasa Rajapaksa is also ready to show his strength in the presidential election by resigning from his post. On Wednesday, Sajith Premadasa, leader of the main opposition party in Parliament, Magi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), filed his nomination at the Election Commission office along with party general secretary Ranjit Madduma Bandara. Premadasa, an MP from Colombo, is the son of former President Ranasinghe Premadasa.
