Nestle’s Sugar Inequality: Nestlé adds sugar to baby milk sold in poor countries.

Nestle's Sugar Inequality: Nestlé adds sugar to baby milk sold in poor countries.

“Nestle, a big company that makes baby food, has been caught putting sugar in their products sold in poorer countries, but not in richer ones like Europe and the UK. Some groups found this out by testing the food in a lab. For example, a baby cereal called Cerelac has sugar in it when sold in places like Ethiopia and Thailand, but not in Germany or France.

Experts say this is not fair or healthy. The World Health Organization (WHO) says babies shouldn’t have added sugar because it can make them like sugary foods too much, which can lead to health problems like obesity. In fact, WHO wanted to ban added sugars in baby food back in 2022.

Nestle tells people not to add sugar to their babies’ food on their website. They say it’s not good for them. But it seems like they’re not following their own advice in some countries.

When asked about this, Nestle didn’t say much. They just mentioned that they’ve been trying to reduce the sugar in their baby cereals over the years. In India, for example, they said they’ve cut down on added sugars in their cereals by up to 30% in the past five years.

So, it seems like Nestle is trying to make their baby food healthier, but some people think they could do better, especially in poorer countries.”
