Modi Government Secures 'Special Permission' from ECI for Countdown Events Ahead of International Yoga Day
The Indian government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, received special permission from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold various countdown events across the country leading up to International Yoga Day on June 21. These events, organized by the Ministry of Ayush, aim to build excitement and awareness about yoga.
The ECI has specific rules, especially since there are ongoing elections in certain parts of India. The rules are designed to prevent political influence during election times. Here are the four key points the government must follow during these countdown events:
1. No Political Images: Any promotional material or advertising used for these events cannot include photographs or images of ministers or political figures in areas where elections are happening and the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in effect.
2. No Political Guests: Political figures or functionaries cannot be invited to participate in these events if they are happening in areas with active elections. This is to avoid any impression of political bias or influence.
3. Neutrality in Advertisements: Any advertisements or public notices about these events must avoid featuring ministers or political leaders in areas where the MCC applies. This includes not showing such images in newspapers that are distributed in these regions.
4. Compliance with MCC: All participants, even if they are not political figures, must follow the rules set by the ECI for these events. This includes adhering to the guidelines for public gatherings during election times.
The Ministry of Ayush, which is responsible for promoting yoga in India, sent a letter to all government secretaries informing them about the ECI’s permission and the need to comply with these rules. The special permission allows the Ministry to organize yoga-related events nationwide, building enthusiasm for the International Day of Yoga while ensuring they remain non-political and compliant with election regulations.
