Many Muslim Leaders Decline White House Invite for Joe Biden's Iftar Party Due to Gaza Situation
The White House invited Muslim leaders to join President Biden for an iftar dinner, a special meal during Ramadan. But many leaders said no. They were upset because they felt President Biden supported Israel too much in the conflict with Gaza. So, the White House had to change plans. Instead of a big dinner, they had a smaller meeting with Muslim leaders.
During the meeting, they talked about what was happening in Gaza. One person, a doctor, showed pictures of children suffering there. President Biden and Vice President Harris said they wanted the war to end quickly. But when asked why they didn’t demand an immediate ceasefire, President Biden said he was worried Israel might not agree because they were worried about their people’s safety.
One person, Dr. Ahmad, left the meeting early to show respect for his community and those suffering. President Biden understood his feelings. This meeting was very different from last year’s happy Ramadan celebration at the White House.
Recently, many Muslim leaders have been unhappy with President Biden’s support for Israel. This has upset some of his supporters, including young people, Black voters, and progressives.
The White House Press Secretary said the meeting was painful for many in the Arab and Muslim communities. She said President Biden is still working to stop the fighting and help people in Gaza.
