Good news for over 2.7 million electricity consumers in Uttarakhand – March bills to be lower!
Electricity consumers in Uttarakhand have something to cheer about—this March, their electricity bills will be lower! The state power department is offering a ₹137 crore rebate, providing relief of up to 95 paise per unit for domestic consumers. According to Anil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), there was a significant reduction in power purchase costs in January compared to the estimated cost for the 2024-25 financial year. As a result, a total discount of ₹137 crore (₹1.19 per unit on average) will be passed on to consumers in their March electricity bills.
A festive relief for consumers
Ahead of Holi, the power department has given consumers a big gift by reducing their electricity bills. This rebate is being provided under the Fuel and Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) mechanism to benefit residential and commercial users alike. Anil Kumar explained that as per Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission’s tariff regulations, if the monthly power purchase cost exceeds the approved cost, the additional expense is recovered through FPPCA charges in consumer bills. However, when the cost is lower than estimated, the savings are returned to consumers. Previously, between July and December, a total of ₹427 crore was refunded to consumers under this mechanism.
How much discount will different consumers get?
- Domestic consumers: 35 to 95 paise per unit
- Commercial consumers: ₹1.37 per unit
