Madan Mohan’s son’s interesting revelations on the songs of ‘Veer Zara

When producer director Yash Chopra heard the tunes composed by composer Madan Mohan years ago, he immediately decided to include them in his film ‘Veer Zara’. This has been a wonderful experiment in Hindi cinema in which songs were later written on the blank tunes composed by a composer and these tunes were used as the soul of new songs in a film. Composer Madan Mohan’s son Sanjeev Kohli has made interesting revelations about this music on the re-release of the film.
Sanjeev Kohli says, “Veer Zara was such a dream for me that I could never even dare to believe it to be true. It was the realization of a son’s dream for his father’s musical legacy. My father, the late composer Madan Mohan, died in 1975 at the age of only 51. He did not get a chance to create much new. Big production houses and popular awards always stayed away from him, and this thing used to hurt him a lot.
One day in 2003, Yash Chopra shared with Sanjeev Kohli that he had decided to direct a film. Before this, Yash Chopra had made his last film six years ago. According to the information, Yash Chopra wanted a film that would have old world music but without western influence. He wanted music that had a strong melody based on Indian sounds, like the music of the 60s and 70s, like the music of Heer Ranjha and Laila Majnu.
