Kevin Pietersen Joins Delhi Capitals as Mentor: Big IPL 2025 Move

Kevin Pietersen’s stepping in as the mentor for Delhi Capitals, and he’s got history with them—he captained the team in 14 matches back in 2014. That year didn’t go so hot, though, with the team only winning two games and ending up at the bottom of the points table. Still, he hit it off personally with the team’s co-owner and GMR Group bigwig Kiran Kumar Grandhi during that time. Just last September, Pietersen helped seal a deal between Hampshire County Club and the GMR Group. England’s former captain Kevin Pietersen has nabbed the mentor spot for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2025. At 44, he’ll be teaming up with head coach Hemang Badani, assistant coach Matthew Mott, bowling coach Munaf Patel, and cricket director Venugopal Rao. DC’s still got to name their captain, though. This is Pietersen’s first coaching gig in the IPL. He last played in the league back in 2016. He said, “This is a cracking chance for me, and I’m pumped to join the team and work with the guys.” Back in 2014, Pietersen led Delhi in those 14 matches. Sure, the team only scraped two wins and landed at the bottom, but he built a solid bond with Kiran Kumar Grandhi, the co-owner and GMR Group head. Last September, he played a part in linking up Hampshire County Club with GMR for a deal.

Pietersen shared, “I’ve got some great memories from playing for Delhi in the IPL. I teamed up with Venu (Venugopal Rao) during the 2012 season too. So, linking up with him again and starting a fresh chapter with the franchise feels pretty awesome.” Recently, Badani, Rao, and Munaf’s coaching crew teamed up with Dubai Capitals to snag the IL T20 title—Capitals’ first trophy in that franchise tournament.
