Jabalpur (Cyber Fraud): A young man looking for better medical treatment for his mother searched online for a good private hospital’s contact number. When he called the number, he unknowingly connected with a scammer. As soon as he booked an appointment, ₹46,999 was deducted from his bank account. The victim filed a complaint with the police on Saturday, and Adhartal police have started investigating the case.
How the fraud happened
Ashish Kumar Gupta, a resident of Galgala Chowk, was worried about his mother’s health. Despite previous consultations, he was not satisfied with the treatment. So, he decided to take her to a reputed private hospital and started searching online for good options.
Scammer sent a fake link
On March 3, Ashish found a contact number for a hospital and called it. The person on the other end told him that there was a ₹10,000 fee for booking an appointment. When Ashish agreed, the scammer sent him a link and asked him to fill in his details. As soon as he opened the link, his phone started lagging and hanging.
Bank alert exposed the scam
Sensing something suspicious, Ashish immediately closed the link and disconnected the call. Shortly after, he received a message confirming his appointment for March 7 at 11 AM. However, within minutes, he got another message informing him that ₹46,999 had been deducted from his bank account. The police are now tracking the scammer using the phone number and other digital footprints. They have started a detailed investigation, examining all relevant documents and other possible leads.
