Devastating Elephant Attack : Pregnant Woman Killed in Ambikapur
In Ambikapur, a village named Sonajori faced a tragic incident where a pregnant woman named Jayanti Katua lost her life due to an elephant attack. Jayanti was bathing in a pond when three elephants charged at her. Despite her efforts to escape, she was trampled by a male elephant, causing severe injuries to her head and ribs. Sadly, she didn’t survive the attack.
The incident left Jayanti’s husband, Sunil Katua, in a helpless situation as he is visually impaired. Jayanti, who was also visually impaired, relied entirely on Sunil for support. With her demise, Sunil found himself in a difficult situation.
Following the incident, the local villagers demanded financial aid for Jayanti’s family. While the Forest Department initially offered Sunil Katua a compensation of ₹20,000, the villagers insisted on a higher amount, demanding ₹9 lakhs.
Ambikapur is known for being heavily affected by elephant activity, especially in the Tapkara forest area, also known as Nagalok. This region, situated near the border of Odisha and Jharkhand, experiences elephant movements throughout the year.
It’s important to note that Jayanti Katua’s death was a result of the elephant attack, causing severe injuries to her head and ribs. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities living in areas prone to human-elephant conflicts.
