Cricket-Badminton, Hockey-Shooting out of Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Giving a big blow to India’s medal prospects in the Commonwealth Games, the host city Glasgow has removed major sports like cricket, hockey, badminton, wrestling and shooting from the 2026 edition. Glasgow has selected budget-friendly sports for the 2026 games and has also made a list of them. Table tennis, squash and triathlon have also been removed to limit the budget and organize logistics. Only four venues in Glasgow will host the entire games.

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will begin on July 23 and will run till August 2. The Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow in 2014. Glasgow’s return as host after 12 years has brought many problems. The Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement: ‘The sports programme will include athletics and para athletics (track and field), swimming and para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and para bowls, and 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball. The games will take place across four venues – Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena – including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). Athletes and support staff will be housed in hotel accommodation.’
