Chief Minister Dhami : has provided an important update regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He announced that the UCC will be implemented in Uttarakhand starting in January 2025. All preparations for this have been completed, making Uttarakhand the first state to implement the UCC after independence. During a meeting of the Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board (UIIDB) at the secretariat on Wednesday, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the state government has done its homework to implement the UCC as promised. He mentioned that after the new government was formed in March 2022, the first cabinet meeting decided to set up a special committee to work on the UCC. This committee, led by retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai consists of five members.
Instructions to Officials
The Chief Minister instructed that based on the committee’s report, the UCC Bill 2024 was passed by the state assembly on February 7, 2024. After receiving the President’s approval, the notification for the bill was issued on March 12, 2024. The rules for the Uttarakhand UCC Act, 2024 have also been prepared, ensuring that the state is fully ready to implement the UCC in January. To make the UCC accessible to the public, a portal and a mobile app have been developed. These will provide online services for registration, appeals, and other related functions.
UCC Implementation Timeline
CM Dhami confirmed that the Uniform Civil Code will officially come into effect in January 2025. The UCC law in Uttarakhand aims to promote the core values of inclusivity, development, and trust within society. It is expected to open new avenues for the empowerment of women and children, especially in the Dev Bhoomi region. He also directed officials to ensure proper training for personnel to implement the provisions of the UCC and to gather all necessary infrastructure. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of keeping as many services online as possible for the convenience of the public.
