Raipur 17 January 2025: Chhattisgarh has taken a big initiative towards achieving the goal of clean environment and net zero emission. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai said this today at the Chief Minister’s residence office on the occasion of the conclusion of the historic tripartite MoU between Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority, GAIL India Limited, Bharat Petroleum and 6 municipal corporations of the state for the production of compressed biogas from urban solid waste. The Chief Minister congratulated all the organizations for this special MoU and said that this step will give Chhattisgarh a new identity in the field of cleanliness, energy production and sustainable development. The Chief Minister said that today another important link is being added in the development of Chhattisgarh. Under the Sustainable Scheme in Chhattisgarh, we are moving rapidly towards the production of compressed biogas from urban solid waste. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had started the Swachh Bharat Mission and through this initiative, there was widespread awareness among the countrymen about the cleanliness of their surroundings. He said that now better work is being done in the state regarding cleanliness. By setting up these plants in urban bodies, our resolve to make the cities clean and beautiful will be fulfilled. The production of biogas as biofuel will also fulfill our energy requirement and the concept of waste to energy will also be realized. He asked all the organizations involved in the MoU to complete the work of setting up the plant in a timely manner. Chief Minister Sai said that this MoU will not only fulfill the big objective of environmental protection and cleanliness but will also create employment. This work will be completed with the cooperation of reputed institutions of the Government of India and we will also get the benefit of their expertise in this field. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Saw said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, big decisions have been taken in the direction of environmental protection, cleanliness and waste to wealth. A continuous campaign is being run in the state regarding cleanliness and today it has become a very important subject for the cities. Our goal is to make the city clean, beautiful and comfortable and with the MoU with the reputed institutions of the Government of India, this work will be completed with quality.
During the MoU, Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Subodh Singh, Secretary to the Chief Minister P. Dayanand, Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr. Basavaraju S, GAIL India, BPCL, Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority and officials of 06 urban bodies were present. It is noteworthy that under the Sustainable Scheme (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) in Chhattisgarh, there is immense potential for the production of biofuel such as compressed biogas (CBG) from urban solid waste. In this sequence, with the continuous efforts of Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), a tripartite MoU was signed today with CBDA, GAIL and BPCL for setting up compressed biogas plants from municipal solid waste in Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari municipal corporations. These included an agreement between Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba municipal corporations and CBDA and GAIL India Limited, and between Bilaspur, Dhamtari, Rajnandgaon municipal corporations and CBDA and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). Key features of the project Through this MoU, about 350 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste per day and about 500 metric tonnes of surplus biomass from 6 municipal corporations will be used for biofuel production. These 06 plants will produce about 70 metric tonnes of compressed biogas per day. An investment of about Rs 600 crore in these projects will be made entirely by GAIL and BPCL. Similarly, the state will earn GST of around Rs 6 crore per year from the production and sale from the plants. The state will progress in the direction of cleanliness, environmental protection, organic farming and net zero emission. As a result of the MoU, organic farming will be promoted from the co-product generated from the establishment of the plants. Effective disposal of waste will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and Chhattisgarh will progress towards achieving net zero emission.
