Big change in UPI: Know what is the new rule

If you use Unified Payments Interface (UPI), then there is an important information for you. From April 1, 2025, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that all such mobile numbers, which have been inactive for a long time, the UPI ID associated with them will be automatically deleted. This step has been taken for security reasons.

Step taken for security – Many times users turn off their old mobile number, but do not delete the UPI ID associated with that number. If the same number is allotted to someone else in the future, then the new user can misuse that UPI ID, which increases the risk of fraud. Therefore, if your mobile number has been closed for a long time and any UPI ID associated with it is active, then after April 1 it will be closed.

What to do if the number is changed – If you have changed your mobile number but services like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm are still active on the old number, then these services will also be stopped. If you have not updated the new number with your bank, you will not get UPI access. NPCI has directed all banks, UPI apps and third-party providers to implement this new change by March 31, 2025. Therefore, if you have changed your number, update the new number in your bank and UPI apps immediately. This will keep your UPI services running without any interruption and you will not face any kind of problem.
