Arvind Kejriwal's First Night in Tihar Jail

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was sent to 15-day judicial custody in connection with the now scrapped liquor policy case, began his stay in Tihar Jail with a routine that included home-cooked meals, tea, and breakfast, as per prison rules, sources revealed on Tuesday.

Kejriwal, lodged in Jail Number 2 of the high-security Tihar Jail, was provided with an isolation room and amenities according to the court’s orders, including a table and chair for three books. Despite the confined space, he slept on his own bed, distinct from the regular ones provided by the jail authority, without any complaints, according to sources within Tihar Jail.

Officials noted Kejriwal’s preparations for managing his diabetes, observing his placement of devices such as a sugar sensor and glucometer, along with necessary items like isabgol, glucose, and toffees on his table. The court had directed jail authorities to permit Kejriwal to carry these items for emergency use in case of sudden fluctuations in his sugar levels.

Kejriwal’s day commenced early, with breakfast and tea served at 6:40 am, followed by an early lunch. He is required to return to his cell at noon and remain there until 3 pm, as per the prison schedule.

The Delhi Chief Minister was transferred to Tihar Jail on Monday afternoon after the conclusion of his Enforcement Directorate custodial remand. The ED portrayed him as the central figure in the alleged scam, accusing him of providing evasive replies and concealing relevant information during the investigation.

This is not Kejriwal’s first stint in Tihar Jail; in 2014, he was also lodged there for refusing to furnish a bail amount of Rs 10,000 in a defamation case filed against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari. Additionally, other AAP leaders currently detained in Tihar include Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and Sanjay Singh.

It’s worth noting that Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha, who is also the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, is also currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
