Anurag Kashyap’s Bold Statement: Bollywood Lacks the Brains to Make a Film Like ‘Pushpa
Anurag Kashyap’s : Recently, Anurag Kashyap expressed his disappointment with Bollywood, stating that he plans to leave Mumbai and head to the South for filmmaking. He mentioned that creating films here has become quite challenging for him.At this time, filmmaker Naga Vamsi commented that South cinema has forced Bollywood to rethink its approach, which has led to some backlash on social media. In this context, Anurag Kashyap also shared his thoughts, claiming that Bollywood has forgotten what the audience truly wants. He specifically pointed out that filmmakers in Bollywood lack the creativity to produce films like the pan-India hit, ‘Pushpa.’
Speaking to *The Hollywood Reporter*, Anurag noted that the Hindi film industry has overlooked the desires of its audience, giving South films and their creators the opportunity to dominate the market. He referenced his own films, *Gangs of Wasseypur* and *Mukkabaaz*, explaining that poor decisions by production studios prevented these films from being released properly in North India.Anurag stated, “Our audience has been collectively ignored. For instance, during COVID, I found out that my two films—*Gangs of Wasseypur* and *Mukkabaaz*—which now have a huge following in North India, were never released there.
During a distribution meeting, I learned that my films weren’t released across North India because the studio decided my main audience was only in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Hyderabad. How foolish can they be?”He further remarked that South films have taken over the Northern market, with even their dubbed versions making significant profits. Anurag added, “We make Hindi films, but we’ve ignored Hindi film audiences. This has allowed someone to capitalize on the situation by creating a YouTube channel called Goldmines, where he started selecting South films at low prices, dubbing them, and the Hindi audience began to embrace them. The audience grew so much that the trailer for *Pushpa 2* was released in Patna.”
