Women are getting work in the village itself
Sitabai of Jhalaria village of Depalpur block of Indore district says that the women of her village had to struggle for hours to fetch water. The fatigue of carrying water from long distances was also adversely affecting health. After the tap line reached every house under Jal Jeevan Mission in Jhalaria village, he expressed his desire to provide his services to the Village Water and Sanitation Committee. The committee entrusted him with the responsibility of collecting water tax from the village along with making him a pump operator. As soon as Sitabai took charge of the work, she supplied water to the entire village on time and as per requirement. Also told the villagers that by depositing water tax, maintenance and expansion of the tap water scheme will also be done easily. Due to the efforts of Sitabai, the villagers became aware of paying water tax and Sitabai collected water tax of Rs 1.79 lakh in the beginning and deposited it in the committee’s account. Now Sitabai is very happy that after getting the responsibility of pump operator, the village is getting good water supply. Besides, by getting honorarium, she has also become financially independent. With the payment of water tax, the confidence of the village committee towards the villagers has also increased. It is noteworthy that due to the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission, every year on an average more than 30 lakh people are getting employment related to operation and maintenance of the schemes. According to a survey by IIM Bangalore, in the five years since the implementation of this mission, employment has been created for more than 1 crore 47 lakh persons every year.
