India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test played in Chennai to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Chasing a target of 515 runs, Bangladesh’s second innings collapsed for 234 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc and took six wickets. India has thus maintained its dominance in the points table of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.
The Indian team has played 10 Test matches so far in this WTC cycle, out of which it has won seven matches, lost two and drawn one. India is at the top, while defending champion Australia is in second place. It is known that the two teams at the top of the WTC points table make it to the final. India has reached the final twice so far, but had to face defeat both times.
Bangladesh slips to sixth place
Bangladesh came to India with increased confidence as it recently defeated Pakistan 2-0 in a two-Test series on its own ground. However, Bangladesh disappointed in both batting and bowling in the Chennai Test against India. The Bangladesh team has thus slipped to sixth place in the WTC points table. Bangladesh’s PCT is 39.29. However, the team will have a chance to save the series. The second Test between India and Bangladesh will now be played at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur from September 27.
Bangladesh troubled the Indian batsmen a lot in the first innings, but the pair of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja overpowered its bowlers. After this, the bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah gave India the lead in the first innings. In the second innings, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant strengthened India’s lead, while Ashwin did not allow Bangladesh to reach the target.
Ashwin was chosen as the Player of the Match
Ashwin performed well with both bat and ball in this match. Ashwin scored a century in the first innings and when the Indian team was looking in a difficult situation, he shared a 199-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin was chosen as the Player of the Match for his all-round performance. This was the 10th time Ashwin received this award in Tests.
